Pre-requisite experience

Students may want to take the SBI101 and SBI102 courses as a pre-requisite for this course.

Objectives

Design of smart buildings relies heavily on good specifications, proper system design and engineering, and a good master plan. This course builds upon previous introductory concepts and provides a solid foundation of best practices, design choices, and options for system architectures, system and sub-system integration, building management system options, and BAS security design considerations.

Learning objectives include:

  • Understanding best practices for system design
  • Integration of various building subsystems into a building management system
  • Specifying interoperable open solutions
  • Understanding the various designer, contractor, and supplier roles and responsibilities
  • Showing several examples of multi-tier system architectures
  • Understanding BMS user interfaces and design options
  • Introducing a comparison of Cloud Based and Onsite BMS solutions and design considerations
  • Understanding the basics of BAS network security
