Antenna Theory [SP6910]

In this course, we cover in some detail antenna theory. Lessons will cover the antennas, their characteristics, their specifications and what the specifications mean. The course continues on to include system issues that surround the antennas, such as system return loss and isolation between two antennas, and inter-modulation.

This course is aimed at anyone who is involved in the designing and installation of wireless cellular infrastructures. While we cannot possibly expect anyone to become an expert on RF communications simply by completing this material, if some of the mystery is unveiled and the picture seems a little clearer, its objective will have been met.

Pre-requisite experience:

There is no pre-requisite experience required for this course. SP6000 RF Fundamentals will provide you with a sound understanding of RF theory if you do not have any exposure to these wide area communications networks and antenna.

  • Introduction and Terminology - In this short lesson we will begin to understand why its important to understand antenna theory and the impact it can have in practice, we will also learn some of the basic terminology, evolution, dB, VSWR, Wavelength, Frequency and Velocity, Dipole, Polarity and Antenna Pattern.
  • Antenna Radiation Patterns - In this lesson, we look at the basics of how you can achieve gain through antenna pattern shaping, reflectors, linear array antenna examples, Directional antenna and the Yagi.
  • Gain and Polarization - In this lesson, we will introduce the basic concepts of gain and antenna polarization, what gain is, Gain references - dBd and dBi, theoretical and directive gain, polarization and OMNI Antenna
  • Antenna Types and Feed Networks - In this lesson, we will review different types of antenna and what they look like. Plus we will discuss the main type of feed networks within the antenna, Low band DualPol, radiator designs, feeds, microstrip networks, Air Stripline.
  • Pattern Shaping - In this lesson, we will expand on the terminology and needs related to pattern shaping. Pattern objectives, lobes, sidelobes, beamwidth, ratios, suppression, filling, CPR, tracking, Squint, SPR, comparisons and objectives.
  • Sectorization and Polarization - In this lesson, we are going to talk about system issues. So in this portion of the course we’ll talk about selecting sector antennas. We will talk about some special narrow beam antenna applications. We will discuss the polarization - why use vertical versus slant 45. Overlay patterns, narrow beam applications, diversity tests, future technology focus, overlay and handoffs.
  • Mechanical and Electrical Downtilt - In this Lesson, we will talk about mechanical and electrical downtilt. We will have a brief slide on the RET optimization products plus introduce some more advanced antenna technologies. Effects of blooming, combined tilt designs, remote control and advance technology designs.
  • PIM and VSWR Effects - In this Lesson, we will discuss passive intermodulation. Plus we will consider the effects of return loss as measured through the coax and the total RF path. The Lesson finishes with a couple of slides on antenna isolation.
  • Pattern Distortion - In this lesson, we look at pattern distortion and the effects of different types of obstructions. Distortions, patterns, performance with various non-conductive camouflage.
