The focus of this course is to take a detailed look at Fiber optic technology within our market and the associated CommScope fiber solutions. The course covers safety, transmission theory, cable structure and design, connectors and pre-terminated solutions, splicing and testing. Recommended for Design Specialists already and wanting to understand fiber technology and solutions in more depth.
The course goes well beyond that covered within the specific design courses and takes the student to a fiber 'specialist' level.
The course covers Fiber Optic Safety followed by an in depth look at fiber Transmission Theory. It moves on to include Fiber 'Types' and DMD, Cable construction and Installation practices. Connectors, termination solutions and Pre-terminated Fiber Solutions are all covered in detail. Finally Splicing and Testing practices including OLTS and OTDR are detailed.
You will learn:
• Safety considerations for lasers, LED's, cable components and tools
• Transmission theory of light in fiber, Index of Refraction, Refraction vs. Reflection, Numerical Aperture
• System and Component Specifications including: Attenuation, Wavelength, Spectral Width, Tx Power and Rx Sensitivity, Dispersion, Bandwidth
• Basic manufacturing principals and Multimode Fiber types, DMD (Differential Modal Delay) and its impact on multimode fiber, Single mode fiber types.
• Cable structure and design: OSP Loose tube, tight buffer and indoor / outdoor
• Fiber optic connector types, ST, SC and LC, termination solutions, interferometric testing and patterns, the MPO array, couplers and mating theory, crimp technology
• Pre-terminated fiber, pros and cons, solutions
• Fiber Optic Splicing, safety, geometry, why splice, preparation, types of splicers, the splicing process, how it works and PAS core alignment
• Cleaning, Testing requirements, Simplex and Duplex testing, Testing Pre-Terminated Solutions, Referencing, Loss budgets and using an OTDR
